It is a requirement to pin up in advance for each half-day session

Review Friday 13 November



We will have a cross-over review on Friday from 9.30 onwards with Unit 4 in the lower review space.
Requirements are as follows:

Rendered sketches describing how your building sits in the landscape, (axonometrics work well as underlays for this), how one approaches your building from the landscape, how one moves through your building and how the landscape is experienced through your building.

1:20 model






I took my 1:20 section through the corner of the building to look at the different facade conditions and how they related to each other. The structure comprises of radial, two storey rammed earth walls with timber boxes slotted between them to create rooms. The main facade treatment is a perforated plywood screen which sits in front of windows, plain plywood clad walls or an open timber frame depending on the condition of the internal space. These screens open out to create private terraces for the bedrooms and access to the garden from public spaces.

In this Model I wanted to explore my construction and façade with a focus on the repetition of structure, and how a modular façade could work within this framework. The façade must address differing conditions on site, privacy, openness, lightness, shade and must do so whilst maintaining a visibly coherant architectural language.


The model shows the regular timber structure, and two types of infill wall type, the open large glazed panel, and the private shuttered and clad wall above.


The building material is timber, and there is a mirroring of the surrounding trees on the site, with slender vertical elements.

If you are looking for inspiration for drawings, have a look at Richviewer, James Rossa's blog for Representation at Richview -  a lot of the material from his lecture is on this. There are also links to tutorials etc for computer programs and drawing systems.


Also, have a look at the drawings  Bratke made that Michael Pike spoke about in his lecture.

A timber gridshell structure especially for Greg!










This model gave me the opportunity of studying the structure of my design. My concept of the design is using glulam beams from the back wall which curve over the building to support the roof. The glulam beams, on the other side of the building, are supported by posts, allowing the facade to be glass. This gives a direct relationship with the landscape and the river which flows along the front of the building. Whereas a blocked off view towards the road and public is formed on the other. The glulam beams change in height throughout the building, creating different height spaces for more public and intimate areas. The glulam beams allow independent floors to be formed underneath, which are supported by posts. The design for the roof comes from my concept of echoing the flowing water. This is done by using a metallic surface which is made up of different angles which will catch sunlight at different angles, similar to when water is flowing and the ripples catch sunlight. Furthermore, the geometry of the roof allow roof lights to be formed to bring light into the back of the building. The angles are biased towards the back of the building so rain water will flow off.

Making this model has informed my design more
than anything. So far it has shown some of the limitations in what I am trying to create. I want the building to overhang this rather steep slope floating on stilts and to create a world beneath the under croft where lectures and demonstrations can take place alongside an area for people sit and reflect whilst viewing the river.

1:20 Model





The aim of my model was to examine the materiality of the building by focusing on the entrance area.

From the exterior my design is quite pure in form. Thus I have chosen concrete as the primary material to be used in the building's construction.The walls consist of two layers of reinforced concrete, between which a layer of insulation is sandwiched. I intend the concrete to be dyed to give it a a charcoal grey colour.

The floor and roof are also concrete in structure. However I have chosen a wood finish for the floors and copper sheeting for the roof. These materials, which are warm in colour, stand in direct opposition to the cold concrete.

My aim for this model was to explore, materiality and facade detail and how they relate to structure.
In terms of Materiality I choose a timber frame with timber cladding and timber internal finishes. My inspiration for this was Aaltos' Villa Kokkonen, a house for a Musician. Timber has a nice resonance which makes it ideal for music playing, however the Music room had to be structurally separate due to timbers poor sound insulation. I want to use this property in order to enhance an acoustic experience of the river. Visually I was trying to set up views to the water and trees and trying to block views to the built aspects of the site such as the M50 Bridge . Through level changes and a series of windows at different heights.
Having completed the model I feel I now need to work on how the new and existing buildings meet in terms of threshold and junction.
